Entrudo
In the north of Portugal, Carnival is not confined to three days. Entrudo was born there in 2017, out of a family project: a mother and a daughter, colour, the sound of rattles, and the wish to keep the celebration going all year. The first designs looked to the Caretos and the Carnival of Trás-os-Montes, rich in materials, textures and sound.
Everything is designed, made and produced in Portugal. Natural raffia is worked by hand, and the raffia bags are ironed one by one. Basketry, weaving, knitting, crochet and hand embroidery meet on a single object: a natural palm basket dressed in a cotton knit embroidered in cross stitch, a canvas inner bag, a leather label. On the shoes, the insoles are built for comfort and the cutting stays manual.
Nothing is made in advance. Each piece is started once it is ordered, in small quantities, using surplus materials whenever possible. On the pieces we looked at, allow around four weeks before dispatch. Measurements shift slightly from one piece to the next, which is what happens when an object is entirely handmade.
Bags, embroidered baskets, mini baskets, mules and sliders: the wardrobe is short, colourful, recognisable, and often open to a monogram embroidered on the front.
