Ariane Rubiella
Leather stitched by hand in a Corbières workshop, the saddler's way.
In her workshop in Conilhac-Corbières, Ariane Rubiella lays several coats of dye along the edge of a piece of leather, then burnishes them with beeswax, a finish learned inside the great houses. She says the leather chose her: as a child, in the equestrian world, the smell and the creak of saddlery had already settled something.
Her path shows in every piece. An apprentice with the Compagnons du Devoir, then a bootmaker in Saumur where she made bespoke boots for the Cadre Noir, trained in saddlery and harness work, later a pair of hands at Hermès and Goyard before joining their design offices: twenty years of experience and craft gathered into a single pair of hands.
Everything begins here, designed, prototyped and made in the workshop. The leathers are mostly French, sometimes Italian, chosen full-grain and vegetable-tanned. Pieces are sewn one by one, with a saddle stitch or on a machine inherited from her teacher. The shoulder bag La Nomade, born during a lockdown, opened the collection; bags, small leather goods and kendo tsubas followed. Some pieces are numbered, dated and signed, while the vegetable-tanned leathers grow more beautiful with the years.

Why we love this brand
A single pair of hands brings together the Compagnons training, the Cadre Noir boots, saddlery and a spell at Hermès and Goyard, then carries all of it into a workshop in the Corbières. Nothing is outsourced: every piece is drawn, prototyped and stitched on site. And the leather even reaches into kendo, with hand-made tsubas.

Handbags
This is the heart of the workshop. A shoulder bag with equestrian accents, a backpack that turns into a shoulder bag thanks to a carabiner strap, a linen tote, a clutch that slips under the arm: the register runs from bohemian chic to something far plainer, from everyday to travel. The leathers are full-grain and vegetable-tanned, from tanneries in the Aveyron, the Pays Basque or Toscane. Saddle stitch or machine stitching, edges dyed and burnished by hand, magnetic flaps and sheathed fastenings. Each bag is made to order, so allow three to four weeks.
Small leather goods
Here the work narrows to smaller pieces. A coin purse in goat leather from the Montagne Noire, lined with lamb and sewn entirely by hand; a belt cut to your waist, with the buckle of your choice and edges dyed by hand; card holders, long wallets, bracelets, bag charms, a key ring. You can choose the colour, sometimes the buckle or the length, and give the object a character of its own. Lead times are short, two to three weeks depending on the piece.
Kendo
Ariane Rubiella practises kendo, and she works for fellow practitioners from the inside. She makes leather tsubas, made for the shinaï or the bokken: two thicknesses assembled together, a sole leather for firmness and a saddlery leather for the motif, sometimes with a salmon-leather inlay. She also repairs equipment, from replacing a kote palm with deerskin to fitting edging or lacing a do. You will come across her at training camps and competitions, where she collects gear and shows her tsubas.
