Crud

Swedish vegetable-tanned leather and waxed canvas, built to age with you.

In Tärnsjö, at one of the last workshops in the world still tanning leather with bark and plant matter, Crud finds its raw material. The hides come from nearby Swedish farms, taken as a by-product of the meat industry, so no animal is raised for its skin alone. Each piece is then cut, burnished and waxed by hand before reaching the small workshop in southern Sweden where the bags, backpacks and accessories are assembled. There the leather meets waxed cotton canvas, an outdoor material that shrugs off wear and takes on a patina.

Behind the brand is Alex Bechet, who spent more than ten years in fashion before turning back to nature and a simple idea: better to invest in one lasting object than to keep buying things made to be thrown away. Crud works in small batches, with materials chosen to age with character, leather that softens and deepens, surfaces that gain presence rather than wearing thin.

The merino knitwear is knitted in Sweden. The gloves, by contrast, are made in the United States, Japan and Ethiopia: with glove-making all but gone from Sweden, Crud says so openly and works with specialist glovemakers where the craft still lives.

Why we love this brand

Few brands name so plainly where they make things. Crud hand-cuts, burnishes and waxes its Tärnsjö leather, assembles its bags in southern Sweden, knits its wool at home, and admits without fuss that its gloves come from elsewhere, since the glove-making craft has vanished from Sweden.
