Amavela
Everything starts with soy wax and a slow, attentive pour. In its Porto workshop, Amavela pours and finishes every candle by hand, in small batches, small enough to look after every detail that matters: a clean pour, an even burn, the right weight in the hand. Soy wax was chosen for its plant origin, for a matt finish that brings out the forms and for the calm way it burns.
Here a candle is thought of not as a product but as an object, something you hold, light and live with. The wax is poured into hand-moulded forms in mineral composite, drawing on Portuguese craft and the rhythm of the Atlantic. There is a shell resting on a base of waves, a whale, a cylinder with an azulejo-inspired relief painted by hand, or a Christmas bauble kept afterwards as a decoration, year after year. One line draws on Portuguese tradition, another on the coast, and seasonal editions appear in limited runs. Candle and packaging form a single gesture, ready to give. The website tells the story of each piece, right up to what remains once the flame is out.
