Crud: leather that takes the colour of its owner
Crud states that its bags, backpacks and leather accessories are both designed and made in Sweden, assembled in a small factory in the south of the country. Its leather comes exclusively from Tärnsjö Garveri, which describes itself as one of the last tanneries in the world still tanning with vegetable extracts. Tärnsjö's own account of its vegetable-tanned leather explains that every hide is Swedish, that the whole process happens under one roof, and that each batch is numbered so it can be traced back to the farm.
Look first at the Nordre card case. Four slots, seams sunk into recessed channels so they do not rub through, edges sanded, bevelled, burnished and polished by hand. In its natural colour it starts pale and firm; within a few months it has taken on the colour of the hand that carries it. The belt is the more serious gift: 3.5 mm Tärnsjö leather, a solid brass roller buckle, 30 mm wide. For a stocking, the keychains are cut from the same hide and closed with a hand-set copper rivet.
One honest note. Crud's gloves are made outside Sweden, and the brand explains why on a dedicated page: glove-making skills have largely left the country. Its waxed canvas is British. For the party season, the bow tie and the braces are both made from bicycle inner tube, and the finish keeps a trace of where the material came from, which is rather the point. For everyday use, the card holder is cut from decommissioned fire hose, with edge dyeing and saddle stitching done in Val-de-Reuil. The brand describes the material as resistant, waterproof and durable. A jeans pocket will test all three.
Is it a gift for every man? No. Someone attached to traditional leather may find it too conceptual. For anyone who likes an object with a story to tell at the table, it is hard to beat.
