It begins with a knitting machine in Rusko, a district of Oulu. It does not cut into a length of fabric, it knits each piece directly to its finished shape and size, so almost nothing falls to the floor. North Outdoor built this mill in 2021, and it is where all of the brand's knitwear is made, jumpers, knitted shirts, hooded tops, ribbed beanies. Those pieces carry the Avainlippu, the Finnish origin mark, and come with a 100 day satisfaction guarantee. The rest of the wardrobe is designed and tested in Finland, then manufactured outside Finland, and the brand states this plainly.
One material runs through the whole range, merino wool, bought mulesing free from South America, South Africa and Australia, and spun by European spinners. North Outdoor publishes the micron count of each piece, the unit that measures fibre fineness and decides what the skin actually feels: 18.5 for the knitwear, 17.5 for one 150 g/m² base layer, 16.0 for the woven shell jacket, a wool made wind resistant and water repellent by the weave alone, with no membrane and no synthetic fibre. Northern winds and the ice of the Bothnian Bay handle the rest of the testing.
Few clothing brands buy their own machines. North Outdoor did, and lives with the consequence: the knitwear comes out of Oulu, the rest does not, and nothing in the brand's language blurs that line. Fibre fineness is published in microns, product by product, rather than folded into vague promises of softness.
