Hempecable

Some things simply should not be rushed. At HEMPECABLE, a bag begins with hemp, one of the oldest textile fibres there is, chosen rather than followed as a trend, a fibre that improves with time and keeps its identity through use. Everything is made by hand in a small studio in Portugal, on a deliberately small scale, each piece passing through the founder's hands from the first cut to the final finishes.

The reference is Portuguese textile heritage. The most worked pieces draw on bainhas abertas, the drawn-thread hemstitching developed long ago on linen and here carried over to hemp, alongside fringes frayed by hand and macramé detailing that turn a plain woven panel into something alive. Interiors are cut from deadstock fabric, so no two linings match, and closures shift from piece to piece: a drawstring here, a recycled zip or a wooden button there. Cork tags and organic cotton straps finish the work.

Each bag carries the name of a woman from the founder's family, a quiet homage to those who made manual work an expression of creativity, resilience and care long before her. The result is a small catalogue, roughly 21 to 149 euros, running from roomy everyday totes to compact crossbody bags and a cylindrical organiser. Because the hand is present at every stage, small variations are part of each piece rather than a flaw.
